Bob Newhart - A Shell on the Beach

Don Rickles' best friend started his professional career as an accountant. His motto of "That's close enough" just didn't cut it in the accounting business.

He then tried his hand at writing advertising copy. It was while doing this that he and a friend started entertaining each other with absurd scenarios on the telephone.

Later, the pair started recording the conversations, and sending them to radio stations as audition tapes. When his comedy partner dropped out, Newhart continued as a solo act.

By 1959, he signed with Warner Brothers. The Button Down Mind of Bob Newhart won the 1961 Grammy for Comedy Album of the Year.

Of course, Bob went on to be star in two successful TV series, but this shouldn't let us overlook his unique style of stand-up.
